I found the timeline of Gwangju Uprising that I find it really helpful to create paintings. 
The timeline is well depicting the situation of Gwangju Uprising. It frighten me with the details. 

TIMELINE OF MAY 18 -27, 1980

May 18, 1980
00:00 – Chun Doo Hwan declares martial law throughout the country
01:00 – Paratroops deployed to and occupy Chonnam National University and Chosun University in Gwangju
09:00 – Students of Chonnam National University start protesting against the occupation of the university
10:30 – Paratroops begin to suppress student by beating them with clubs
Confrontations between students and soldiers rise around the city throughout the day, and other troops standing at the periphery of Gwangju come into the city, with the operation name ‘Splendid Vacation’
May 19, 1980
11:00 – Citizens gather at Gwangju hub, Gumnamro, and paratroops open fire with a tank
15:00 – 6 bodies found, violently killed
16:50 – 2000 citizens gather at Gumnamro to protest the repression; paratroops use flamethrowers on the people indiscriminately and strip citizens to wearing only underwear
May 20, 1980
16:00 – Citizens gather again at Gumnamro, replace slogan of resistance “Withdraw the Martial Law” with “Damn the Slaughter Chun Doo Hwan”; Paratroops armed with machine guns start indiscriminately firing at citizens in front of City Hall
May 21, 1980
10:00 – Martial law administrators make a speech requiring citizens to calm down but citiznes still stand face to face with troops and prepare for the counterattack
12:50 – Several buses that are part of the demonstration break through the militants’ line
13:00 – Paratroops start shooting with machine guns from helicopters and armed cars; Civilians rescuing another, running away, falling are all killed
14:00 – Demonstrators arm themselves by attacking police stations near City Hall and securing weapons; armed citizens face the paratroops again at City Hall and tension escalates; paratroops retreat temporarily outside Gwangju
May 21 – May 26, 1980
Gwangju is a liberated area, self-governed by citizens
May 27, 1980
04:00 – Troops reenter the city and quell the civil militias in less than two hours; 1740 rioters arrested and 730 detained for investigation
